Typing or Dictating
Lesson 6 Module 2
Meet Your Manuscript Document and Google Voice Typing
The only way you're going to write your book is by writing a book. First step is creating your Manuscript document store all your text. It's recommended you use a word processor but it doesn't need to be fancy because you won't be printing that document as a book. That text will go into your design document once the text is edited and proofread. It's a no brainer to make sure your Manuscript is somewhere easily accessible for writing sessions and backed up somewhere independent of your devices.
Give Google Drive and Google Docs a try. Find a blank Manuscript Document here that you can Make A Copy, save in your own Google Drive and edit as your own. It comes with a built-in automatically updating Table of Contents.
How To Get Text Into Your Manuscript Document
You don't have to be the best typist but it certainly wouldn't hurt. Typing is a skill that gets better and easier with practice. Your speed and your accuracy picks up the more you type. Best way to become a fast typist is to go slow. What? Yes. Go slow.
Take your time getting really comfortable as you type and allow repetition to train your fingers to remember where the particular keys are. Try to wean yourself from looking at your fingers when you type. Keep your eyes on the words on your screen. Gradually if you go slow and you allow your fingers to learn where each key is, your fingers will eventually start doing this faster.
The worst way to type fast is to try to type fast! That's because when you rush you'll make more mistakes and you'll get more frustrated and you'll quit. Let's not do that. Go slow.
Google Voice Typing
And there's another way if you'd rather not be typing with your fingers.
It's called Google Voice Typing. The way it works is you simply talk to your computer and the microphone picks up your voice and automatically converts your voice into text. That text is dropped right onto your Google Doc in this case your Manuscript and all you have to do later on is go back in and edit that text. You can probably dictate your stories about five times faster, maybe even faster than you can actually type. Give it a try! Google Voice Typing. It's in the Tools Menu in your Google Doc.
Don’t Edit When Writing
Stuff down the urge to stop and fix spelling or grammatical errors. Give your Inner Perfectionist the day off. Let your ideas flow and trust that you’ll type enough words correctly that you’ll capture the gist of the ideas. If you stop and edit or rewrite you may lose the flow of new ideas. Reserve editing for later, after a rest.
