Your Family Tree Graphic Seen In Your Book or Film

Lesson 16 Module 5

Genealogy and Visuals

Doing genealogical research can be worthwhile but all-consuming.

Our first objective by using an online genealogical platform is to create easy-to-understand graphics that can go into your family history book. In this way you can illustrate various people and relationships.

Once you've input names, dates of birth and death, and a head shot for each person, you simply do a screen grab of the Ancestry tree and you've got a very usable graphic for your book. Typically you might create four family tree screen grabs focusing on the relatives of each of your four grandparents.

Our second objective, although not essential for your book project, is to collaborate with other cousins and family members who might have story information or photos. Providing a DNA sample to Ancestry or other DNA genealogy website likely will connect you with 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th cousins who might love your family's ancient history as much as you.  Some of them probably have already created family trees that you can use to populate your own.

The other kind of collaboration you can do is simply sharing your tree with other family members like siblings, kids, first cousins and they can add more images, dates, and anecdotes to your tree.

Caution with genealogical research: Many people find genealogy fascinating and they love hunting for lost relatives and missing documents. This can take up a ton of time. If your goal is to write a book focus on writing what you do know about or can surmise rather than hunting for more stuff. Later you can research for your second book!
